Has anyone ever thought of what society would be like if we didn't have a significant level of conformity? Driving properly on roads, material specifications for machines/tech, lineups at the store, urinating/defecating in designated areas? Everyone can't do whatever they want.
-
We might take that to the next level. When the need for conformity is bothersome, it indicates an opportunity for innovation.

Seems like everyone would be their own personal pie chart of what makes them conform. Sometimes cowardice. Sometimes just trying to get through the day. I'm sure the ingredients are often similar but hard to generalize a main cause.

I agree. I see conformity as a neutral state, as in it can be derived from a negative state such as cowardice, or a positive state such as desire.

It can serve many purposes, some pragmatic, others not so much.
