This comes with the territory once you become sufficiently visible. If you tell the truth, you're inevitably going to contradict some ideologue's axioms. They need to find some way to explain you away, and many will lie if they need to.

I found the most effective weapon is to ignore. Responding is fodder. To manage your mental health when it’s too much, type your angry rebuttal on a notepad, let it marinate, then delete it and move on. The more I do it, the less it bothers me.
Sam, I don't think responding is fodder when 1) issue at hand is legitimacy of v. important data & analysis; 2) data & work of the accused is oft-informing global decision processes (eg WHO quotes OWID on vaccines). I think it's beyond Max the person & it's good he set the record
I agree with this advice. I was attacked and belittled by a former boss for years. He created false data to try and shame me. It is impossible to know people’s true motivations. I’ve found they are usually insecure and jealous, and they aren’t worth our time.
