What's something that looks way riskier than it actually is?

Fascinating. Makes total sense.

Are you hang gliding? Ever tired paragliding?
-
I’ve tried paragliding, but not hang-gliding. Paragliding is maybe an even better example, since you’re literally suspended by an already-open chute.

“Control bar”? If you can take your hands off it and it flies fine, you’re overestimating how much you can de-risk. My dad’s friend died like this. Only took a single downdraft.
-
Must've been an unusually risky glider then.

A family friend died hang gliding when he ran into high tension power lines. Also, hang gliders look for updrafts. Updrafts are common near cliffs. Hitting the side of a cliff in a hang glider is not uncommon and not anti fragile.

A good friend got paraplegia from hang gliding. Got thrown back to the ground by a gust immediately after take off.

It’s actually riskier than it looks. While paragliding is stable, with updrafts, wind gusts, and lack of regulation it’s common to hear of accidents. You also glide in new areas with unfamiliar air dynamics. With hang gliding you are even less stable and move faster = riskier.
