What's something that looks way riskier than it actually is?

Fascinating! Why? Lower accident per trip rate than people would think?

Being out in the open, rather than inside a fuselage, makes it seem more dangerous than it is. And people don't get that the glider is designed to be stable. You can take your hands off the control bar and it will fly fine.

True of almost any activity where what drives the perception of risk is an irrational human fear of heights. Hang gliding, bungee-jumping, air travel etc. Being on the ground is much more dangerous than being in the air.
-
It's not irrational. It may be a lot of things but irrational isn't one of them.

Helicopters. Those things are trying to throw themselves apart.

Maybe "not as dangerous as it looks" but still somewhat dangerous: 3-5 deaths per year (and some serious injuries) in something with only a few thousand participants. https://uscstoryspace.com/2017-2018/erikajkl/Fall_Midterm/HangGliding/ …

Hang gliding is extremely dangerous. 1 in 116,000 flights results in death. It’s easy to stall. All ultralight flight is dangerous. Something I’ve always wanted to do but won’t bc of the inherent risk.
