When people say they're flattered by copycats, or that it validates the market, actually they're annoyed. Copycats suck.

An annoying but inevitable part of creation.

Nobody likes being ripped off. No matter how much we try to persuade ourselves it doesn't matter (even if it really doesn't).

The reality is that if you provide high value it is going to happen. It’s frustrating but it’s a indicator of good work.

How would a copycat validate the market?

according to the founder of Adidis it's considered a compliment in Chinese culture.

The Chinese seem to be very polite in that respect.

A copycat with a lousy product but a large marketing budget can be nice.

No cat has copied anything or anyone. I refuse to believe in so-called “copycats”.

Copying is only flattering if you have a competitive advantage that guaranties the copycats will fail. Otherwise, it’s not just annoying but could be fatal. Just ask Meerkat that pioneered live video only for it to become a checkbox feature or Snapchat and stories.

If your business can be replaced by a checkbox on someone's application.. that's on you. Copycats are always playing catch-up. I don't see the threat to businesses that actually innovate.
