Most businesses are small businesses like plumbers, nail salons, shoe stores, cafes, and so on. So all a graph like this shows is that fewer of those are being started.
Aren’t you agreeing with the article’s broader point, though? The decline in these typical small businesses could indeed be related to rising inequality.
You’d think they’d do the most basic analysis.... but no. See a graph, dream up the story, meet the deadline, drink the wine.
Still raises an interesting question of whether tech helps fragmented industries to stay fragmented (or become more fragmented) w/ increased small business starts...
So, does HomeAdvisor or Thumbtack beget more starts by streamlining customer acquisition or allow savvy locals consolidate share?

Still not sure. The graph talks about firm startups - how do we define that? How would the graph look like if segmented by industry.
A shame that fewer people elect to have their own business, even if more engineers are making SaaS startups. A great opportunity to productize company formation, taxes and compliance and buck the trend
