Oh, I think you’re saying fewer companies are being started overall, and that’s what the graph is measuring. I.e. the journalists aren’t actually looking at graphs of startup foundings, but businesses overall. Is there a source for startup count over time? YC batch size, maybe.

The graph was labelled startups, but was showing all kinds of businesses being started, including eg nail salons, even though most people who use the word startup are talking about growth businesses only, usually tech businesses.
