I vote that if someone said something terrible before they're 18 and sincerely apologises and no longer believes the terrible thing, society should extend them a full do-over.

If you no longer believe the terrible thing, what difference does it make how old you were when you believed it? Surely it's not justifiable to punish people for opinions they no longer hold.

The absurdity of holding people accountable for idiotic hot takes from high school will evaporate. This is one of the blessings of forgetting.

Time is used as a proxy for confidence in the move. The longer the timeframe, the smaller the error bar. Other factors should be able to substitute, I agree with that. Further, human judgment and empathy are know to improve after age 25 and after having children.

Word. In Sweden about 50% of politics today is about discussing what someone thought, or did not think in some political party 20-80 years ago.

I agree, but there's an enforcement problem: It's more plausible that someone changes their mind about many things at 20 than at 60. Old alleged mind-changers might just be performing instead of actually becoming a different person.

tbc I don't think it's bad to believe wrongthink if the external actions visible to the rest of the world is exactly the same.

My guess, one has a much great opportunity to act on those beliefs when older, with greater impact if in position of power. People tend to think a belief is some esoteric thing that has no impact in the real world. It's far from the truth, imo.

All young people believe in stupid things. But only really stupid people believe in really stupid things for a really long time in adulthood. While this doesn't justify continuous "punishment", it is good a shortcut for credibility.
