It seems to be a very poisonous combination to be smart and ambitious and yet not to have achieved very much. Such people are both bitter and highly effective at realizing that bitterness.

What typically holds these people back? Have you noticed something common? Say social skills?

That is a fascinating question. I've seen a lot of these people from a distance (they're very common on Twitter), but I don't know what it is that gets in the way when they sit down at their desk to create their Great Work and prevents them from doing it.

It could be. It could be that they're driven by ambition rather than curiosity, and that in practice that's not enough.

Good take. It could also be what @SPressfield calls “resistance”, a monster that we all must face if we are to create something that we truly care about

Ambition without hard work and curiosity is a catastrophic combination. Sounds familiar, Enron?

I think often it’s lack of focus rather than lack of curiosity. Lots of shiny objects.

Or too much curiosity about too many different things. Easily distracts and can’t focus.

Thank you for the book recommendation. What a coincidence - the other day I realized that i am too egoistic to do what it takes to make my projects successful. But idk what to do about it. That book could be helpful, I'll give it a try.

Perhaps early on they are able to advance in schooling past an optimal point and stockpile credentials vs being forced to learn how to grind on low-status projects?
