It seems to be a very poisonous combination to be smart and ambitious and yet not to have achieved very much. Such people are both bitter and highly effective at realizing that bitterness.

Humility.

Lack of humility? Or just people with humility who are not able to blow their horn?

Haha. Totally relate to the seeing on twitter bit. I guess it's easy to say things rather than put them in action. Also, a lot of the people who I thought were smart on twitter have turned out to be folks picking up ideas from elsewhere and just tweeting.

A lot of these people are smart and ambitious, but lacking in the third crucial skill of taking action. Big dreams, big ideas, but unable to do the unsexy dirty work to get going.

I'd say grit, they are capable of doing the work but don't have the endurance to accept failure

Lacking grit and patience. “Smart” and ambitious people tend to lack grit and patience - they want results now. But most asymmetric results occur past the first few setbacks and iterations. They can’t get past their ego.

Fear of failure triggers a self-fullfilling prophecy.

Lack of belief, sometimes hiding (justified) resentment towards some successful classes, is a powerful self-fulfilling prophecy among the smart and ambitious. It's a quite reversible condition, though. You only need belief. And any external source will do.
