Startup founders - what was getting your first customer (or real user) like? Was it a friend of yours?

FWIW: A startup that I joined in 2006 never charged a dime for its product, even with thousands of users (can't recall the actual number). But we got acquired at a pretty good price, and since we never took any VC money, we did ok.

That’s usually what happens, specially for B2C product. We had scheduled to run Google ads for our SMS Gateway back in 2005 and our phone rang on day 1, we got our first customer on our first call (
@websitepulse) followed by@Expedia and others.
