Startup founders - what was getting your first customer (or real user) like? Was it a friend of yours?

It was @bobtreitman, whom I knew from a company I'd worked for. I think he could tell we were technically competent, and there wasn't much risk because we made it free initially.

In retrospect, was making it free initially a mistake or the right thing to do?

We didn't make it free initially for all users, just for the first handful. And as I explain here, we had to do that even to launch: http://paulgraham.com/worked.html

FWIW: A startup that I joined in 2006 never charged a dime for its product, even with thousands of users (can't recall the actual number). But we got acquired at a pretty good price, and since we never took any VC money, we did ok.

That’s usually what happens, specially for B2C product. We had scheduled to run Google ads for our SMS Gateway back in 2005 and our phone rang on day 1, we got our first customer on our first call (@websitepulse) followed by @Expedia and others.

We got our first big retailer on Thursday and we’re not taking a cut from their sales initially!

The ceo initially thought it was too good to be true and I told him that we need their clothes to scale to the demand of college girls who want Adla. I asked for 500 units but he gave me 1000
