Something I explained to my 12 yo son: Any idea that hasn't been implemented yet is probably at least somewhat mistaken. That's one reason, though not the main one, that there is no market for ideas.

In practice, what we mean by a good startup idea is a bad startup idea whose flaws can be discovered and fixed before it's too late. And probably only by a handful of people.

The idea that we think hasn't been implemented yet is either: 1. Being implemented somewhere but we aren't aware of it; or 2. Been implemented and failed beforehand. Concept inspired from @warikoo

Regardless if the idea is mistaken, it should be exposed. Fear holds back more innovation than mistakes ever will. Mistakes or flaws may be corrected. Iteration is the lifeblood of innovation.

Just because you see a $20 bill on the ground doesn't mean it's fake because otherwise someone else would have picked it up. Sometimes, you're just the first to notice something.

Or the idea existed before but the environment wasn’t right for it yet - you needed smartphones, gps, faster internet, etc. Wheeled luggage took a long time to catch on because people didn’t used to have to carry it across huge airport terminals.

How does the first sentence work if you consider the first time someone came up with the idea for a social network or a smart phone?

You'll notice the first of those didn't do well, because the ideas *were* somewhat mistaken. (Remember SixDegrees and Friendster? I sure don't remember the DOS compatible HP OmniGo 700LX.) There's still value there if you're close enough and iteratively improve on the wrong idea.

Nice. (Note to self - This is about filtering ideas - when I think of imparting this observation I need to also inspire progeny to think of how to find, formulate, develop ideas too)
