Startup founders - what was getting your first customer (or real user) like? Was it a friend of yours?
It was @bobtreitman, whom I knew from a company I'd worked for. I think he could tell we were technically competent, and there wasn't much risk because we made it free initially.

In retrospect, was making it free initially a mistake or the right thing to do?

@paulg and his team as 'technically competent' is an understatement. (2) I like to think that I was more like a beta tester than a customer. (3) If I recall, only a small number of the initial users were free.
