Yet instead of doing what would be fun, and thereby maybe solving stuff, people do what they're told they 'must', or what they think they 'should'.https://twitter.com/webdevMason/status/1222631434235473920 …

There's just a whole lot of work to be done concerning utterly fascinating natural phenomena and novel technologies. For the right people, it's going to be so FUN! And *everyone* is looking for promising projects to fund — moonshots too. A new Bell Labs could rise out of this

Was reflecting on a related thought earlier: my income over the years has typically been anti-correlated with the social value of whatever I'm doing. (There are exceptions). I don't think this is unusual at all: the labor market for creative work seems mindbogglingly inefficient

If "social value" refers to things that many people would prefer you did but which you don't *especially* prefer, then in an efficient economy those things would be better rewarded than what you'd most prefer doing. But is it possible you mean something else by "social value"?

Typical example: it's relatively easy to get well paid to do unimportant work in fashionable areas, but hard to get paid at all to do what will ultimately be seen as important work in (currently) unfashionable areas.

What important work is it hard to get paid to do? (I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just interested in fixing this.)

Every work related to solving, in a globally optimal way, real issues in domains like environment, medicine, energy efficiency, which do not only involve a (possibly technical) logical solution but also its adoption by actors who pursue their own local optima ?

Basic science in general has to be funded without expecting a return. Taxes and philantropy. For everything else, let the market do its job.

basic research. I think history shows it's very valuable to better understand fundamental details, even though you won't know at the time how it will be valuable.

I intentionally kept that broad. Because the idea that you can narrow it down to certain kinds of basic research implies that you can predict what sorts will be valuable. I don't think that's possible. You just need to make lots of bets.

I sense funding for some important work may be more time and situation dependent than others. e.g. exploratory mathematics, R&D, science may be done by starving phd candidates, or massive funding may be available by governments (and tied to e.g. military agendas).

If the question is “paid” instead of “paid well” then the academic system does help with funding certain types of projects that are positive in the long run but don’t generate a profit. However, not everything fits into academic mold.
