I think part of the problem with Maths is that most people are not wired to think critically. It's not in their nature. I don't know if there is a solution to this and maybe a better approach is for us to consider how we can work better with human fallibility.

Thanks Paul. Feels like the scientific method. I learn by doing. So the depth of what Laurens said only hit me after I began auditing. "In our opinion" "present fairly" "in all material respects" "examined on a test basis" (sampled). Everything is couched in circumspection.

How would you recommend someone in their 30s or 40s to develop an understanding for real math? What should you know/learn?

The Beginning of Infinity is also a great book that argues along the same lines.
