Same goes for ‘non-historical’ figures as well...it’s easy to lose site of how what culture sees as acceptable changes in one lifetime.

That said I find it interesting when writers from the past come across as enlightened about avoiding cultural chauvinism. eg Montaigne (inventor of your favorite writing form) says South American cannibalism is bad but Inquisition torture in Europe is not better

It’s funny that historical figures such as Gandhi, Lincoln, Mandela etc are tested on the current parameters of ‘wokeness’ This will never end. Today’s people (including us) will be attacked & ridiculed on our beliefs which presently seem normal to us.

exactly!! They literally renamed a title in my uni last year that was called "David Hume Tower" because he said something unpolitically correct in one of his writing centuries ago. It's such a shame for such a great man
