I don't think Twitter is unique in that past a certain point it has diminishing or even negative returns. But the kind of short bursts of intellectual stimulation that I find on Twitter, which I started to use regularly only last year, has been unmatched elsewhere.
-
Its stimulation in general, the mechanics of its components (retweet, follow) leads to an all-out assault on the senses being procured to your feed. Think traditional media but automatically refined.

The good news is that we 15 min/day Twitterers benefit from the daily dose of pg available here. But as for you personally, the track record suggests you might be more fulfilled with a deep project. Did you feel better on a day-to-day basis when writing Bel?
-
Actually I used Twitter way too much when writing Bel, because it was so slow that I had to wait minutes for code to load and tests to run, and during those waits I'd check Twitter.
