Why do we debate whether to use "Latino/Latina/Latinx" when we have the perfectly serviceable and gender-free "Hispanic"? (I know they technically mean slightly different things, especially regarding people from Spain, but they're typically used interchangeably in the US)

Because doing something awkward allows you to signal (a) that you're more deeply committed, and (b) that you're at the cutting edge of fashion.

Why focus so much on separating people into largely arbitrary buckets of What, when we can instead focus on each individual as a Who? Less external identity/validation, more internal locus. I swear our antiquated status driven, mimetic tribal wiring will be our undoing...

Makes sense. We too can make YC more committed to inclusion and cutting edge of fashion: XC/YC/ZC.

"Hispanic" is obsolete because it refers to descendants of Spanish settlers in what is now the US southwest. There are, for example, many indigenous-language speaking Mexicans, descendants of slaves from Africa, etc. in the latinx population. It's not perfect, but it is better.

Why is latinx better than el pueblo latino o la gente latina? In short, Latinos. Also, as a Spaniard I undeniable share ancestors with the half of America that has Hispanic culture in it, and I'm having trouble seeing why it's better to downplay that

i always thought "hispanic" was considered impolitely inaccurate (not derisive, just old-fashioned). It also conflates the island of Hispaniola (which is half-French-Haitain, i think?). Latin_ makes little sense, as that refers to the linguistic category of the invaders..
