The question is: Does Google *unbias* search in any way using “ML Fairness”? We know they claim not to bias search. But then they claim they need to unbias it. So let’s start with unbiasing as the Russel conjugation of “Tweaking”. It’s like “anti-racism” or “inflammable”.https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1369342766191411206 …

ML fairness is a separate research/eng group that works with various teams. There are several non-political use cases of it in product teams. It’s largely an eng team. Outside world gets a more activist view due to news.

That's a falsifiable claim but one we unfortunately don't have access to the facts to vet. We have bits & pieces only. Also, none of this is monolithic. It's possible certain teams & portions of Google's products are compromised to lesser or greater degrees. We just don't know.

Happy to rephrase: Do you Paul or does your friend believe that they-Google have zero Google-units currently “unbiasing” search?

Use Hume's Miracle Principle. Which is more likely, that the tons of evidence we've all personally seen is just accidental, or that your friend isn't as trustworthy as you thought? And for us, it's like when someone says his trustworthy friend says he knows a man from Mars.
