Most of the really successful founders I know are actually pretty flawed or damaged people who just became masterful at channeling negative things into super positive things.

“Damaged” is definitely not how I’d characterize it, but most good founders I know have a chip on their shoulder. Having something to prove and strong external motivation can take you a long way.

Maybe it's the selection bias of the people I hang out with more than anything - but I think if you surveyed 100 succesful founders we'd find a majority fit Larry Ellison's criteria of "having all the disadvantages required for success" in some form
-
There might be selection bias on both ends, here. We tend to gravitate towards and attract people more similar to ourselves than not. Maybe it's just that determination comes in all shapes and sizes?

Isn't there some survivorship bias for founders get to talk to *you*? By that time, "flaws" may appear as mere footnote - not because they are less serious, but because they weren't hindered by 'em (which could be the result of many factors, one of which is luck).

But also, made me think of this podcast: https://samharris.org/podcasts/89-becoming-better-person/ … where Brooks talks about a pattern of highly successful individuals having a combination of unconditionally and *conditionally* loving parents. Sounds like a recipe for neurosis + motivation to me :-)

Not wanting to work for someone else is both my greatest flaw and my greatest advantage.

The heart of alchemy lies in converting flaws to strengths. At the end of the day we all work for someone :)
