If you have to choose between someone who's a jerk in personal matters but perfectly correct in his opinions, and someone who's upstanding in personal matters but heretical in his opinions, choose the latter.

The tricky part may be finding other aphorisms that hit the bar of “you could bet on X forever and never lose.” Many aphorisms have a plausible-sounding opposite. If you can identify the special few w/ truthiness of actions>words, that would be applicable wisdom for many.
