There's another reason for restricted donations: Internal politics. I've seen non-profits *ask* for donations to be restricted, because the current management / donor liaisons don't trust *future* management to make the right decisions.

There exist non-profits that can't be duplicated with missions you support lead by poor boards/directors you can't vote out who are easily distracted. Restricting a donation means the project you believe is the best thing for the org gets funded rather than deferred forever.

Same. It sounds like a noob investor mistake. Sad it’s in the non profit world.

Haven't thought about this in years. Growing up, was part of a small church. A wealthy member funded a major portion of the new build. 1 criteria: Everything had to be bright, bold red. No one wanted it, caused dissent. Ended up with an all red church---carpet, pews, everything.

agree! this especially important for smaller NGOs and those that are just starting. I've always thought we need more angel investors, or something like a "G combinator (Green combinator)". You just pitch your conservation approach, get funded for 3 years or something.
