Just curious: do you have explanations for another bump at about 1650–1725?
I would guess it was because earnestness was fashionable during the Commonwealth, and afterward there was a bit of a reaction.

Timing isn't perfect, but there's possibly a link between grand solar minimum and cultural change - perhaps via it getting very cold in winters. 1650-1715 was Dalton and 1790-1830ish the Maunder. Look at religious spiritual themes like "The Devil" in ngrams. Religious awakngs

Here's a related question - how did we go from the dissipation of Hogarth Gin Lane to the soberness of the Victorians? Something shifted that made people feel differently. Nothing worked (licensing laws etc) before that shift.
