The idea of earnestness took off with the Industrial Revolution, but  started to become unfashionable in the late 19th century and declined through the entire 20th:pic.twitter.com/05eDuny6Eo

why do you think that is?

Partly that people were richer, and partly that there were new generations of intellectuals who could score over previous generations by portraying them as squares.

So is your thinking less wealth -> more earnestness, or more wealth -> less earnestness? If yes, why? I'm curious 🙂

You need to be earnest to build things. You don't need to be as earnest to enjoy things other people have built.

          That’s an interesting hypothesis.

So, the push to get things done faster and deliver sooner has resulted in less patience and need for instant gratification. That eroded the ability to be earnest and therefore persevere? What is the balance between delivering instantly/faster vs. delaying gratification?

Depends on what you call ‘build things’. I have seen many things being build without being earnest. In fact, earnestness is very rare nowadays.

Would love to see an essay on earnestness! What is it, can you acquire it, what does it help you accomplish? Love the idea that earnestness makes you build things
