"The epicenter of tech in the Bay Area has moved over time from San Jose/Santa Clara (1970s-1990s) to Palo Alto/Mountain View (2000s) to San Francisco (2010-now). It will be interesting to watch if it sticks, or where it goes next in the Bay Area." https://twitter.com/eladgil/status/1366443509704630273 …

Would be curious to see nationwide what happens to commercial office space. If we see a rezoning/retrofit to residential condos. Kinda like how we have seen old manufacturing/warehouse space from outsourcing US manufacturing turn to new residential condo/lofts

This building was another: https://www.2140taylorapts.com/ — the YScraper where many early alumni lived because it offered cheap, furnished month to month apartments. This made it unique even in 2007. I often wonder if so many early YC co's would have moved to SF if it didn't exist.

That's very strange, how could one company be taking that much space and why?
-
It’s a company of 2k and Palo Alto buildings are not that big

I mean, ok, but younger people want to live in the City.

You also don't need large offices anymore, just one small space/address in Palo Alto and remote across the country.

I think the impetus pre-dated that. The employees of peninsula companies were living in SF and commuting. As they spun out of their big co's to start stuff, they opted out of their commutes. YC accelerated the utility of very small "offices" aka "lofts."

There was definitely already some pull in that direction, but the moment the center of gravity shifted was when Stripe and Pinterest moved from PA to SF, and both moved somewhat against their wills because they couldn't find office space.

Interesting. I'd imagine San Jose would've had cheaper housing - was it just that SF was hipper?
