When linking on Twitter to something you've written that could be controversial, give people as little to engage with in the tweet itself as possible. Then (a) they'll have to actually read at least some of it before responding, and (b) you don't give them much to quote-tweet.

It’s much faster! You don’t need to open Twitter, click search, and copy-and-paste the URL (Tweet Peep saves at least 3 clicks) Are you still switching tabs every time you search on Twitter?

If I want to see what essays people are talking about, I just type http://paulgraham.com into the search box. Then I switch to the "Latest" tab, if that's what you mean by switching tabs.
