It remains bizarre to me that the entire discourse around speech, offense, taboos, accountability etc seems to completely ignore that we had an *extremely* similar set of debates about this in 1990s around "political correctness." It was a whole thing!

how would we go about developing a vaccine?

I've spent some time thinking about that. One way is to give names to the general phenomena involved. For example, the aggressively conventional-minded: http://paulgraham.com/conformism.html

I still have a hard time taking the terms “political correctness” and “cancel culture” seriously. Shunning those people who you see as being bad people has surely existed since prehistoric times. Now it’s more visible is all.
-
Of course it has always existed. It also has always been bad. But it is worse now because it is more visible, and therefore more effective. Until recently it was far more difficult to get people fired for having unpopular opinions. And it was better that way.

As someone who was too young to remember that time - how did the situation get resolved back then (if it actually was?)? Do you see a path forward? Or, to extend the analogy, does social media make the pathogen too mutable, too transmissible?

Maybe those of us who *thought* it was handled were wrong, and can now hear the poor, disenfranchised, and minority voices clearly via social media.
-
That's clearly not the explanation. The loudest voices on the far left are generally neither poor nor disenfranchised nor minorities.

Oh really? What are the politically incorrect things from the 90s that you could say in the 2000s?
