What novel technology will do for cryptocurrency what GUIs did for personal computers and the web did for the internet? If you have even an inkling of the answer, the expected value of that insight is enormous.https://twitter.com/IOHK_Charles/status/1364940839332573191 …

One of the things standing in your way is that such ideas have to come from cryptocurrency experts, and yet most cryptocurrency experts are proud of their mastery of the currently difficult user experience, and thus minimize it.

Present-day cryptocurrency experts are like neckbeard hackers in the 80s saying "who needs more than a command line?" and thus failing to invent GUIs. Or if you want a more recent example, the people who said "just write a cron job" and thus failed to start Dropbox.

Being an expert means doing hard things easily, and this, paradoxically, makes you blind to opportunities to make them even easier. And yet such opportunities yield hyperlinear returns. Make something half as difficult, and you'll get way more than twice as many users.

Part of the value of cryptocurrency comes from its rareness and mystery. The moment it becomes ubiquitous among the general population, it becomes another stock except there's no company to back it. There will be thousands more cryptos created and they'll all be get-rich schemes

I've seen dozens of "crypto currency-as-credit-card" startups and yet none of them have seemed to take off. giving normal users (i.e. non-technical non-enthusiasts - purely practical consumers) a significant use case that can't be solved with traditional finance is needed

i.e. a use case, other than greater-fool speculation, that makes users want to buy / receive / exchange crypto leveraging their labor, fiat, or property

I'm not sure direct, layer 1 interaction will ever be mainstream. The average user isn't compelled by the ethos, but by some of the advantages that could be offered by "client" apps interacting with decentralized utilities/infrastructure.

Interesting point about experts being "proud masters of difficulty." Probably explains why experts create solutions, but outsiders take them mainstream. (e.g. GUI created by PARC, popularized by Apple. Relational Database created by IBM, popularized by Oracle)
