This is the root of the far left's beef with SV. The winners are determined by customers, and they don't look like the sort of winners committees choose, either individually or collectively.

Paul, how does this dovetail with women and black people getting less than about 5% of all VC funding?

As far as I can tell based on experience and the people I know who have also chased VC money, the largest element of merit in the SV meritocracy is who you know. Relationships are the primary currency. Great ideas get you $, but you don't get in the door without relationships.

It's funny, because I just saw a tweet by Ycombinator claiming this isn't the case. Or is YC just that small compared to the size of the industry?

You have to know someone to get on the radar of even something small like Ycombinator. I agree with them that once you're on their radar, better ideas percolate, but a lot of people can't get their time of day because they don't have the pre-existing relationships.

That's false. The hardest part of being a YC partner is reading applications. If everything were based on intros and relationships, it would be trivial.
