Fabulous trial reduced loneliness, depression, and anxiety in Meals on Wheels participants who live alone over four weeks. How? College volunteers w 2 hrs training simply called a roster of 6-9 folks 2-5X/week (elders' choice) to ask how they are.https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/fullarticle/2776786 …

There's some scary stats about how anxious and lonely young adults are now, too. We all need some connection and community.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/23/health/coronavirus-mental-health-teens.html …

Nope. People don't need community. They need shelter, food and water. Everything else is secondary.

It reminds me of a friend of mine, a old wise Belgian GP, I one asked to join a European project about smart homes for elders and answered that what they actually need is not to be monitored but to have someone come and share a cup of coffee from time to time.

Often it wasn't even 10 minutes - it was, though, on their terms. So if they didn't want to talk - they said hi and bye. If they did, they talked. And, wasn't just the elderly, 1/3 were below 65 from the 20s up, & we didn't see any obvious differences by age.

And yet my fully vaccinated friend in the local nursing home still can't receive visitors. What's the point of saving old people from COVID only to let them die of loneliness?

If they only gave us a chance to live and call them more often earlier in life.

I’m 55, live alone, no family, no local friends. It’s extremely rare I get to talk to anyone. But on those very rare occasions when I get a call from a friend, I feel better. It also helps me remember how to talk when I start to forget.

@paulg@Atul_Gawande we onboarded over 300,000+ older adults in group based sessions to "learn" at@SetupGet. In the last 12 months we started seeing interesting behavior.. It helped reduce loneliness more than increase their skills. Power of#peerlearning -
Thanks for the results,
@Atul_Gawande This is such a serious issue, magnified recently, but ever-present. We are learning that asynchronous messages also reduce feelings of loneliness, and make phone and video calls more impactful. Voice tech helps some stay in the loop.
