If you cut "and switches to Substack or Patreon," it would be just as true. The departure of the independent-minded journalists damages legacy publications regardless of what they do after they leave.

Further, might it be that explicit opinion journalism on Substack is better than opinion journalism presented as neutral reporting or “The Truth” in the NYT?

I think the solution is publicly-funded journalism that is accountable to the people. Legacy media has to have a corporate bias without it.
