With each independent-minded journalist who flees or is fired from a legacy publication and switches to Substack or Patreon, it becomes more dangerous for those who remain. Eventually only ideologues and cowards will be left. Not that those two are mutually exclusive.

Eventually, working at one of these places is going to be such an adverse signal that they’ll be mostly populated by junior people and managers. Many publications might remove bylines a la The Economist.

Maybe the interesting part is how slowly this is happening. Publishing is the first industry disrupted by the internet and it’s still happening. Suggests there are decades left in this phase of the internet “eating the world”.

Thought-provoking. Wondering how independents can collaborate on Substack or Patreon?

People usually DO NOT leave because they are too scared to do a fresh beginning of their career. They still doubt that their current career is luck or their hard work. The journalist who leaves gives straight priority to CONTENT and is confident about setting up again.✍️

Therefore without knowing anything else, you can make a fair assumption that an independent journalist will produce higher-quality material? Because of a signal about their capabilities. Interesting point! It's like a filter in that way
