1) "Trying harder" is too vague. Time invested is easy to measure. Evaluating effort is not so easy. Evaluating creativity is hard. 2) People better than you at something probably try much harder, but they probably also try much more effectively.

Yeah, had a classmate who regularly stood 3rd in class frm 4th to 8th standard, constantly working on his studies. After 8th he was unbeatable, ended up as the head boy and went on to do extraordinary things. Some1 who looks @ him now won't realise d effort he put in frm age 8.

And he won't realise how much of that success was based upon his string of successes with little to no failures - Not discounting the effort but try to acknowledge the luck there - Not everyone is lucky to have their honest and good effort translate to success most of d time.
