It's impossible to be a good writer without being a good reader. Though there may be a handful of people whose first drafts are perfect, most need many rewritings, and rewritings start as rereadings.

What attributes make one a good reader?
In this particular case, I mean being a good reader in the way that a sensor can be a good sensor. So noticing when ideas are mistaken or badly explained, or when sentences are clumsy.

Makes sense. I find it hard sometimes to gain the “distance” needed to do this. I often find terrible writing good enough right after, but revolting a few days later.

In this case I mean my own terrible writing :) it’s much easier to judge others writing.

I find it easier to be a good reader / editor of other people’s works. Particularly when I have already worked on something my own , I find it useful if someone else reads it and gives me feedback. I hit a kind of ceiling re reading my own stuff...
