"It is, of course, much easier to complain about how things are bad rather than do anything about it, which is why people prefer to complain. 1/100th the satisfaction, but 1/1000000000000th the effort."https://chiefofstuff.substack.com/p/commenting-vs-making …

If I had a gin I'd ask him to make me stop complaining about everything

But there’s a lot more potential upside in doing vs commenting/complaining.

Another is that complaining puts the onus on the other party to change the situation, while if you attempt to solve it, the onus is on you. A finger-pointer will never be accused of failing to solve the situation!

There is only immediate reward for complaining, minimal at that...the reward for doing could last your whole life.

I see this a lot from those that have "mentor" on their business card. Their perceived value is in what others say about them and often has little to do with accomplishments (or at least recent accomplishments). There is no reward in "making" and unlimited upside in commenting.

I've been thinking about this subject a lot recently for an upcoming project. I feel like there may be an optimal level of critical feedback for a group, project, society. Social media's chaotic flood of omni-critique isn't ideal but neither is the other end of the spectrum.

Thinking about this personally, I think it's challenging to know how thick my skin should be. Too thin, and I have no conviction as a writer. Too thick, and I can't accept any smart criticism. Systems need optimally thick/thin skin, too.

some people take their wrong answers as getting closer to the truth, others have a hard time with the damage it does to their pride
