Compare these two images @mattyglesias just linked. If we admit to top schools just on the basis of SAT scores, it'd cut the number of kids from the top income quintile by about half. Maybe that's why colleges don't want to do it?pic.twitter.com/MEL4rWsn5u

Admitting students based on SAT scores would change the demographics of accepted students less than you think, because people would change their behavior to compensate. The rich would have SAT tutors who'd train them like ballet dancers.

No matter how rich you are and how many tutors you hire, you aren't going to get a perfect score on your math SAT if you can't do algebra. And any other selection criteria are WAY easier for the wealthy to game!

As a longtime SAT teacher I can confirm. Of the kids I taught, <10 (out of 100’s) improved scores enough to go state school -> ivy. Of those, all knew the material but were making a few key mistakes. Not a single one who didn’t know the material made a sizable gain.

If college admissions depended entirely on SAT scores, do you think students would improve more?

Some would. The fraternity bros wouldn't.

Marginally in absolute terms but I’d expect general leveling up since schools would more aggressively “teach the test”. That would require increasing top end question difficulty to differentiate good vs great so you’d end up in the same boat on a relative scale.

FWIW I think there are good reasons to diversify admissions beyond test scores (2nd order effect would be students treating class beyond SAT material as pointless). Tests can/should be improved. But they are the best mechanism we have to ID talented disadvantaged kids.
