Compare these two images @mattyglesias just linked. If we admit to top schools just on the basis of SAT scores, it'd cut the number of kids from the top income quintile by about half. Maybe that's why colleges don't want to do it?pic.twitter.com/MEL4rWsn5u

Admitting students based on SAT scores would change the demographics of accepted students less than you think, because people would change their behavior to compensate. The rich would have SAT tutors who'd train them like ballet dancers.

I thought the effects of SAT tutors was fairly small, regardless of what they and their haters say.

It’s only small if used within a short period before the test. It has great effect over a longer timeline like 2-3 years.

No matter how rich you are and how many tutors you hire, you aren't going to get a perfect score on your math SAT if you can't do algebra. And any other selection criteria are WAY easier for the wealthy to game!

Tbh so would low income school districts though, instead of the heterogeneous, hazy metrics they have to use now to attempt to make students well-rounded this could simplify their goals a lot

There isn’t much evidence that SAT tutoring is effective.

Of course, it's even easier to get a positive letter of recommendation, to go on cultural enrichment trips, etc. And test tutors are already a thing! Test scores are the least unfair selection criteria we have. What else is fairer?

Rich kids already hire private tutors for the SAT and other subjects. The larger issue is enforcement of objective standards. The recent cancellation of the SAT 2 tests is a move in the wrong direction.

His point is that they'd take the tutoring more seriously, hire more / better tutors etc.
