Some statistics are worth knowing by heart. The average – mean – income in the world in 2017 per person per day is $16.

This is expressed in international-$ in prices of 2011. This means it is adjusted for the differences of the price level in each country so that 1 international dollar has the same purchasing power as 1 US dollar had in the USA in 2011. BTW: If you were to suggest a list of "Ten important numbers about the world that everyone should know by heart", well, I'd certainly learn that list [and surrounding context]. I often use the following fact in conversation, for instance:https://twitter.com/MaxCRoser/status/919921745464905728 …

Yes please! And once you've chosen the numbers, you can combine them into an OWID state of the world index whose value we can track over time. It will be a crude measure, but still useful as a starting point.

An OWID dashboard + state of the world index sounds like the kind of thing that'd be fun to put up live & permanently on the wall, in the living room or a company office. Good conversation starter and long-term food thought.
