The expression "Give it the old college try" sure makes it *sound* like college students used to work hard.
They did and still do work hard at sports, which is what I think this phrase refers to.

Not in Europe, though. There they don't work hard, *not even* at sports.

I won't speak for others, but MIT students did and still do work hard, both on their classes and at research and on sports and extracurricular activities as well.
