FWIW this tweet made me edit the essay. I had changed "it has worked" to "it's worked" after reading it out loud, which I usually do as the last step. But it looked wrong here so I changed it back.

Probably better without the contraction if there's a good chance you'll get quoted. (I can flaunt this rule as it's not a danger for me—is not renown merely a gilded cage?)
