Programming the browser was and is a hostile environment.
It's almost as if hostility is a #Lindy property of web programming. 
Some of us had to open Photoshop and manually create those text images - it was uphill both ways!

I very much appreciate this throwback. I remember installing Cufon and it converting text to font images automatically via Javascript. Felt like magic. Is http://paulgraham.com the last remaining install of the original Viaweb codebase in production?
