Ideologues think they can further their aims by taking over prestigious institutions. But it doesn't work for the same reason debasing coinage doesn't work. "The New York Times says..." doesn't have anything like the force it did 20 years ago.

If what you’re saying is true it’s primarily because Rupert Murdoch has spent the last 25 years building a conservative media empire whose core premise is that the Times and other mainstream institutions can’t be trusted
The NYT itself has changed too. They've switched from an audience delimited by geography to one delimited by political beliefs, and that has not been good for the quality of their journalism.

sure, and they're not alone in that. but it would be a mistake to underestimate the central role of Murdoch (and maybe Limbaugh) in undermining consensus around trustworthiness of the media. That's the tectonic force here.

Murdoch hasn’t helped. But PRIMARY is since 60s (Vietnam deferment...) college educated have built a world of credentials and regulations that is ever better for them, and ever worse for the non-college. Unsurprising that this has bred anger and skepticism...
