Ideologues think they can further their aims by taking over prestigious institutions. But it doesn't work for the same reason debasing coinage doesn't work. "The New York Times says..." doesn't have anything like the force it did 20 years ago.

The prestige does decline a bit, but the captured prestigious institutions often continue to be the most prestigious institutions in their respective niche. And because they aren't replaced the institutions have been relatively effective at furthering the aims of the idealogues.
