Ideologues think they can further their aims by taking over prestigious institutions. But it doesn't work for the same reason debasing coinage doesn't work. "The New York Times says..." doesn't have anything like the force it did 20 years ago.

Counterpoint: They took over many of the biggest foundations. Money stayed green. They took over most major universities. And more recently they have started to dominate most major corporations. The NYT is weaker but it is still under their control and it hasn't been replaced.

Universities definitely have less prestige and influence than they did several decades ago. And big foundations were always pretty random, because of the agency problem.

Not random. They follow Conquest’s 2nd Law near perfectly.

The prestige does decline a bit, but the captured prestigious institutions often continue to be the most prestigious institutions in their respective niche. And because they aren't replaced the institutions have been relatively effective at furthering the aims of the idealogues.

Institutional structure and superstructure is highly inelastic right up to the point of discontinuities that nobody seems comfortable actually contemplating
