I wonder if on net this can be a good thing. For long-running customs, there are often opaque restrictions that can only be seen after removing the custom.

(I’d bet this really applies to very long running customs at a societal level. When we go down to the individual level, things get a lot more malleable)

I think it has to do with education levels as well. Better-educated people with the ability to see the greater perspective of things are more likely to see pointless customs for what they really are.
