One difficulty when trying to ban ideas on social networks is that it's the edge cases that matter most, but bans are enforced by low-level employees who don't understand them.

I've thought enough about this problem that I'm pretty sure there are no obviously good solutions. Ergo if there are solutions at all, they'll be counterintuitive. Two possibilities: Have the users do it. Have smart people do it, aided by staff and software.

Both of those potential solutions have big drawbacks. That's why I describe them as counterintuitive. But perhaps there are clever ways to overcome them. It's still too early in the evolution of this technology to know what's possible.

I think a hierarchical system could work, where black and white cases are assessed immediately at the bottom by AI or junior staff and edge cases are percolated progressively higher until they reach senior editorial staff.

In fact the core of what works for peer-reviewed papers is keeping the audience small. you want people to read it who have time to think about it, not people who are skimming and accepting uncritically: you want people who will apply system 2

Peer-reviewed scientific journals solve this with a lot of gatekeeping. - Writing that most laypeople won’t read - Credentials required to review & approve or shoot down the work - Maybe a subscription required to read it. is some combo of the above appropriate?

What is your aim here? Are you trying to limit disinformation, or trying to give users the option to not interact with content they dislike? (Both reasonable goals, but I can imagine them having different solutions)

I don‘t think that‘s a technological problem at all. Thought control has been exercised throughout history with varying degrees of success. To work it has to be draconical. Ideas, if viable, will find their host social medium.

There isn't a drawback on people managing who they follow. I would prefer social media companies to just provide the pipes and let people use them as they see fit, and I don't understand why social media doesn't let that happen, like it used to.
