Earnest: “resulting from or showing a sincere and intense conviction.” So similar to my favorite definition of love: “an intense and enduring moral force which seeks the good others, even at the cost of self-sacrifice.” But the reverse is true too: self-sacrifice births love.

“Fake it till you make it” may apply to love (and earnestness) in that acts of deliberate self-sacrifice bond us to the recipient of our service. Self-sacrifice is the ultimate sunk cost, sparking a creative cognitive dissonance. But you can’t fake self-sacrifice: it must hurt.
