Hypothesis: The reason more educated parents spend more time with their kids is that they're richer. Time spent with your kids is a luxury good — when it's done voluntarily.https://twitter.com/_HannahRitchie/status/1338465169874313220 …

An opinion I hear often: "parents spend less and less time with their kids these days". But research suggests the opposite: the time mothers & fathers spend with their kids has increased in many countries. @EOrtizOspina's latest post: https://ourworldindata.org/parents-time-with-kids … pic.twitter.com/RqiFblJZBT

Surprisingly, France has the least number of working hours in the world (35).

Maybe we’re learning how important “parenting” is VS “set it and forget it”.

He’s refuting the popular “ educated parents know important it is to spend time with kids” explanation.

Parental absences (or time spent with children) actually do not correlate with social class. I think @Freakonomics had a few chapters on this.

I'm curious how this can be true for women in these countries, when at the same time, the female labor force participation rate has gone up so much. Hasn't it?

People have less kids and have them later, so averaged over generations you can have the time spent with kids decreasing in absolute but increasing per kid and per unit of time.

Having just had twins this year, this is very interesting (in particular because I am trying to spend as much time as poss with them, as both my parents couldn't afford to with me and I was brought up until I was 6 yo by my grandmother ❤ in India after being born in Scotland)
