A sad trend I’ve noticed is that interesting conversations which used to be held in public are now happening in private chat groups. Twitter has become far too dangerous a place to express new ideas, so the elite chat amongst themselves. Anything public is purely innocuous.
One interesting consequence of which is that controversial statements still made on Twitter get attacked even more, partly because the demand for indignation now has to be satisfied by fewer tweets, and partly because their rarity makes them seem more controversial.

It's a coordination problem. The mob wouldn't have enough time to go after everyone if we all just spoke our minds. But the more people get intimidated, the easier it is for them to intimidate even more, etc.

Some people confuse controversial ideas with good ideas, being inflammatory is not a signal of value or merit but it’s become a weird end game to itself
