I don't think it has much to do with taxes, but rather, that the pandemic has shown how hypocritical the nanny state overlords can be, right?

Why be in a higher tax state when many of the services those taxes fund are deliberately shut down, or just very ineffective. Once the locality network effects start to break, it’s a race to ditch the overpriced real estate.

Not sure how it's going to work for them. Most Californians can't survive in temperatures above 75 or below 60.
