I'm not sure how many people realize this, but Airbnb would not exist without @mwseibel. The company would have died without YC, and they wouldn't have applied to YC if Michael hadn't told them to.

That's undoubtedly true here, in the case of one of the biggest winners. But, logically, it's also possible that in YC there are some companies that succeed and end up winning their space where if they had failed someone else would have come along and done better.
Yes, that's true. In fact, the better a job YC does, the more true it is.

That's not 100% true, fortunately. For example, if you encourage founders to pivot to where they are the most successful, then that reduces their tendency to dominate a space where they wouldn't be the strongest performers.
